(M)Otherhood

Project Statement:

This project was born from a personal place. There were always questions about my biology and who my natural parents were that hung in suspense between my mother and I.

Through my lens I wanted to better understand the silence, the mistrust, the confusion and the conversations that are had between adopted women and their mothers. What happens when you have to pose questions about where you come from? How are the questions welcome/or not ? How can the conversation start and be constructive? What happens or doesn’t in the liminal space between mothers and daughters where honesty, transparency and mutual holding should exist? I existed in these women’s homes, observing the objects that they hold dear and how they better find a sense of roundedness as well as roots in their personal spaces. The main focus will remain on the daughters and on the ways the conversation has been fleshed out in their visual words. One conversation is not sufficient; these images present a first conversation.
